Store your belongings safely

Secure storage for belongings is one of the biggest gaps in NS. Here is what exists:

If you are sleeping rough and need to store belongings safely during the day, call 2-1-1 — they are aware of this gap and may know of informal solutions in your area.

Receive mail without a permanent address

Several shelters and organisations in NS will receive mail on your behalf — this is how you can get government ID without a fixed address.

See the full list and how to request a mail address on the ID & Docs page.

Frequently asked

Do I need ID or to be a shelter resident to use these services?
No. All services listed on this page are available to anyone experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity — you do not need to be staying at the location. Just show up during drop-in hours.
Where can I shower if I’m not in Halifax?
All Souls Harbour drop-in locations have showers — Truro, Bridgewater, Amherst, Dartmouth. Call 2-1-1 to ask about shower access in other areas of NS — this is a known gap outside HRM and 2-1-1 knows what informal options exist.
I need feminine hygiene products urgently. Where do I go?
Brunswick Street Mission (Mon–Fri 9am–2pm), Adsum House, Souls Harbour Halifax drop-in, and all Halifax Public Library washrooms have period products available at no cost. No ID, no registration needed at any of these.
Where can I do laundry for free in Halifax?
Shelter Nova Scotia Housing Hub (5506 Cunard St) and Brunswick Street Mission (2107 Brunswick St) both offer free laundry during drop-in hours. If you’re staying at any shelter village, laundry is on site.
I need a haircut for a job interview. Is there anywhere I can go?
Call Metro Turning Point (902-420-3282) to find out when the next Care Cuts barber visit is. Also call The Housing Hub (782-321-2163) to ask about the mobile barber’s next visit. If neither is soon, ask your shelter worker — they sometimes know of one-off opportunities not listed anywhere.
Can I charge my phone somewhere safe overnight?
Halifax Public Libraries close in the evenings so overnight charging isn’t possible there. Ask your shelter about overnight charging — most shelters have outlets available for residents. If you’re sleeping rough, Souls Harbour drop-in opens early enough to charge before most places open.
